Networking solutions major Cisco has appointed Mike Weston as vice president for its Middle East and Turkey operations.

Weston joins Cisco after more than 14 years with IBM and brings a wealth of experience in three areas critical to Cisco's future success in the region namely data centre, software and services.

The networking infrastructure vendor said the newly created role reinforces Cisco's commitment to the region, which represents a significant global growth opportunity for the company.

Cisco said Weston's responsibilities will encompass Cisco's business operations across Saudi Arabia, UAE, Gulf, Levant and Turkey. He will report directly to Duncan Mitchell, Cisco's senior vice president for the Emerging Theatre.

Mitchell said: "Mike is a real asset to Cisco's leadership team in our emerging theatre and I am confident in his ability to build on Cisco's significant and successful operations in the region, as well as his leadership to take our business to the next level. We have a highly skilled, professional and talented team committed to the success of the region, our customers and our partners. His breadth of technology experience will be invaluable as we continue to implement life changing networks."

Weston added: "I am delighted to be joining Cisco during an extremely exciting market transition of the internet of everything (IoE), an era where the internet has the potential to dramatically improve the lives of everyone on our planet. The business value to be gained through IoE presents an incredible opportunity for technology growth and innovation. I look forward to working with the team to help accelerate Cisco's growth by supporting our employees, customers and partners throughout the region."

Weston has a wealth of knowledge and understanding of how to lead successful business operations in both major and growth geographical markets.

At IBM, Weston held the position of vice president since 2007, most recently as VP, Global ITS Sales for the Global Technical Services division. He also worked in the company's Software Group Division. Prior to IBM, Weston held a data centre senior leadership position for a large financial institution in the United Kingdom, before moving into software sales with CA.
